About the Santander hire bike scheme
The Santander Cycles public hire bike scheme has been operating in London since 2010. There are currently around 800 docking stations scattered about inner London. The cost of the bike hire is only £2 per 30 minutes of use. If you have recently had a bike stolen, this could be a cost effective option to allow you to still get out and about.
For live availability and hiring at the docking stations, you can download the ‘Santander Cycles’ mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. The app also contains some nifty features including a journey planner, history of your usage, challenges and prize draws.
How many people use Santander Cycles?
Santander Cycles saw one of its highest ever monthly usages in September 2021 at 1,219,870 bike hires, compared to 540,859 in September 2010. The busiest months are usually in the summer for the hire scheme, with the peak being in July 2018 at 1,253,102.
Excluding 2020 and 2021, as these are unusual years when viewing data and trends, the following table (containing TfL data) shows the yearly usage to the end of 2019.
Number of bicycle hires
The average time someone hires a bike for has consistently been under 30 minutes for every month when looking back to 2010 in TfL data. This is apart from three months in 2020 (April, May and June) when perhaps the typical usage changed during the first pandemic lockdown. They also offered free bike use to NHS staff and key workers during the pandemic.
